Status: Full-time
Salary Range: $59,476 - $76,000
Description:

The City of Fishers Police Department is seeking a full-time civilian Digital Criminal Forensics Investigator. This role performs advanced protective services work ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the Digital Forensic Unit. This position carries an active digital forensic case load, investigates sensitive material including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), participates in collection, analysis, and evaluation of digital evidence working closely with the IMPD Digital Forensic Laboratory, responds to warrant services and on-scene investigations regarding digital forensics, and assists digital forensic examiners in the field. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Sergeant of the Forensic Services Unit.

Examples of Duties:
  • Identify, examine, collect, and process digital evidence at crime scenes and in a laboratory environment.
  • Perform administrative and support functions to maintain analytical service.
  • Ensure the timely transportation of evidence to/from a laboratory and/or district or office.
  • Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in forensic digital evidence examinations.
  • Testifying in Court, Grand Jury, or other applicable legal proceedings through testimony, sworn affidavits, or other legal instruments.
  • Identify training needs for forensic digital evidence examiners and other Department employees in their area of responsibility.
  • Independently investigate digital forensic examinations cases, manage multiple complex investigations at the same time, keeping superior officers informed on progress or obstacles, closing cases, manage case priority, maintaining positive working relationships with other divisions in the department as well as outside agencies and the media, and preparing testimony for use in court.
  • Participate and be available for digital forensic examination on warrant services and ensures proper procedures are followed. This includes search and seizure of digital evidence, triage and on-scene examination of digital evidence, and coordination with the Forensic Services Unit/other specialties as needed.
  • Maintains time keeping records, reports, and other administrative assignments.
  • Facilitates communication with the Forensic Services Unit Sergeant regarding necessary hardware, software, and related equipment.
  • Provides clear communication including but not limited to verbal, written, and digital communication.
  • Take command of the digital scene; will require the ability to multi-task and make quick and accurate decisions.
  • Effectively communicate with all agency personnel including case detectives, patrol officers, and supervision.
  • Fills out the correct paperwork. Prepares investigative reports, lab report requests, and evidence reports.
  • Maintains proper chain of custody of evidence and the associated documentation.
  • Uses a computerized recordkeeping system.
  • Actively participates in training/instruction for division members using lectures, discussions, and demonstrations to improve the skill level of other employees; and encouraging support and cooperation among personnel; assisting in resolution of problems, conflicts, or grievances.
  • Complete all assigned training programs as directed by the supervisors.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by a supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, criminology, data science, or another related field required or combination of experience and education will be considered if candidate has at least 4 years of applicable digital forensics work experience;
  • Experience or exposure to digital forensic tools, such as Magnet, Oxygen, Cellebrite, X-Ways, FTK, or others is a plus, but not a requirement;
  • Prior experience with computers, external and internal data storage devices, and mobile/cellular devices and components is preferred;
  • Prior experience working in public safety, in an emergency management environment is desired;
  • Excellent communication required both in written and oral skills and must be able to function well as a member of a team;
  • The ability to write clear and concise reports required;
  • The ability to perform complex forensic digital evidence examination procedures in an unbiased manner, and clearly and concisely report on the finding required;
  • The ability to testify in any proceedings in an objective, unbiased, and professional manner required;
  • Must have the ability to attend training courses at alternate locations that may require travel;
  • Must be able to work long and/or irregular hours if required for ongoing investigative support;
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to be insured to drive a city vehicle;
  • This role requires the ability to view sexually explicit and abusive imagery that includes exposure to child sex abuse material (CSAM) as a part of regular duties.
