JOB SUMMARY

Officers identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent proceedings. Identify and reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventative patrol and other measures (including but not limited to community crime prevention and community policing) and facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm, create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Enforces Arizona Revised Statutes and City Code.
  • Communicates to supervisors and to fellow officers all information obtained which is pertinent to any case or investigation.
  • Records activity during tour of duty in the manner prescribed by supervisor.
  • Completes detailed reports and investigation reports on all crimes, vehicle accidents, and other incidents requiring crime reports.
  • Maintains equipment in a functional and presentable condition.
  • Assists citizens requesting service, assistance, or information and courteously explain any instance where jurisdiction is not with the Page Police Department and suggest other procedures to be followed.
  • Informs supervisors as soon as possible regarding the development of conditions tending to cause crime and take preventative action to correct the conditions.
  • Conducts a thorough investigation of all offenses and incidents within the area of assignment and scope of activity.
  • Collects evidence and record data which will aid in identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders and the recovery of property.
  • Performs building security checks, including but not limited to, schools, parks, and playgrounds.
  • Preserves peace at public gatherings, neighborhood disputes, and family quarrels.
  • Serves or delivers warrants, summons, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately.
  • Operates the radio in compliance with FCC regulations.
  • Patrols every part of assigned area giving particular attention to and frequently rechecking locations where the crime hazard is great.
  • Coordinates the securing, receipting and proper transporting of all evidence and property coming into custody.
  • Assists Fire Department in locating fires and medical emergencies.
  • Reports street hazards and any conditions that endangers public safety.
  • Confers with court prosecutors and testifies in court.
  • Takes measures to direct the flow of traffic in assigned areas during periods of congestion.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • Prior experience preferred in a police patrol position, supplemented by continuing law enforcement-related training and education.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must maintain a valid State driver’s license.
  • Must maintain a valid Arizona POST police officer certification.

Special Requirements:

  • Must meet AZ POST standards.
  • Required to work rotating shifts including days, swings, midnights, holidays, and any special shift required. May be required to change days off for special events or court appearances.
  • Training and education through college credit or equivalent is highly desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of rules of evidence, search, seizure, and court procedure is essential.
  • Knowledge of professional investigative techniques, procedures, and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of investigations and evidence gathering tools. Computer, word processing and database software programs, copiers, adding machines and police radio. Passenger vehicles, pickup trucks and four-wheel drive vehicles under normal and emergency driving conditions.
  • Ability to stay well informed on traffic, criminal and other codes related to law enforcement.
  • Ability to know how to strictly adhere to Department procedures.
  • Ability to be proficient in verbal and written communication skills required in English and knowledge of report writing.
  • Ability to conduct interviews with uncooperative, resistive, hostile emotional or traumatized children and adults.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relations with other departments, city personnel, citizens, businesses and other law enforcement agencies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to meet minimum physical and medical standards as set forth by AZPOST.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work requires decision making that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if this position fails to make the appropriate decision(s) at the time. Required to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
